APPROVAL OF THE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE DRIVING GRANT PROPOSAL TO THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR SUNCOAST TECHNICAL COLLEGE IN NORTH PORT
Description
COMPETITIVE: Grant funds of $1,345,784 will establish a new workforce training program at Suncoast Technical College (North Port Campus) in Commercial Vehicle Driving. Students will complete the Tractor Trailer Truck Driver course to earn their Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) so they can fill jobs which are in demand in the local economy. Grant funds will pay for equipment needed to launch the program such as trucks, trailers, driving pad equipment and the driving simulator.
Recommendation
That the Commercial Vehicle Driving grant proposal be approved.

Financial Impact
Additional funds of $3,611,221 will be required to construct the driving pad and portable classroom, to purchase curricula and other classroom equipment and supplies, and to staff the program in the first year. In the future, state workforce development dollars and student tuition will support the program, and drivers already in the industry seeking to obtain or maintain their Commercial Driver's License will generate funds to support the program.
